Vampire Facial Aftercare: PRP Microneedling Recovery Guide

The vampire facial — combining microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) derived from your own blood — is one of the most effective skin rejuvenation treatments available. By combining the collagen-stimulating effect of microneedling with the growth factors in PRP, the treatment accelerates and amplifies the skin's natural repair process.

Because this is a combined treatment (two procedures at once), the aftercare is slightly more demanding than either standalone microneedling or standalone PRP. Understanding what to expect and how to care for your skin is essential to getting the best possible result.

What Is a Vampire Facial?

A vampire facial (PRP microneedling, or PRP facial) involves two steps:

  1. Blood draw: A small amount of blood is taken from your arm, identical to a standard blood test.
  2. PRP preparation: The blood is centrifuged to separate the platelet-rich plasma — a concentrated serum containing growth factors that stimulate collagen, elastin, and tissue repair.
  3. Microneedling: Fine needles create controlled micro-channels across the skin surface.
  4. PRP application: The PRP is applied to the skin during and after microneedling, where it absorbs through the micro-channels for maximum penetration.

The result is a treatment that stimulates collagen from two directions simultaneously: the physical micro-injury from the needles and the biological growth factors from the PRP.

Vampire Facial Recovery: What to Expect

Recovery from a vampire facial is more significant than standalone microneedling because the PRP adds an additional biological response on top of the mechanical skin trauma.

Immediately After (Day 0)

The PRP is often left on the skin for a period after treatment (your practitioner will advise how long) to maximise absorption. Do not rinse until instructed.

Days 1 to 2 — Peak Reaction

The first 48 hours typically bring:

Most patients choose to stay home or work remotely during the first 1 to 2 days.

Days 3 to 5 — Peeling and Resolution

By days 3 to 5, redness begins to reduce and the skin starts to peel or flake as the surface renews:

Do not peel or pick. Allow the skin to shed naturally.

Days 5 to 7 — Skin Calms

By the end of the first week:

Weeks 2 to 4 — Collagen Building

The most significant results from PRP microneedling build over weeks and months as new collagen forms:

Months 1 to 3 — Optimal Results

Collagen production from both the microneedling and PRP growth factors peaks at around 4 to 12 weeks. Final results are assessed at 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does redness last after a vampire facial? Most patients experience redness for 1 to 3 days. Some mild pinkness can persist for 5 to 7 days. By day 7, the majority of patients look normal and can return to work with or without makeup.

Is the vampire facial painful? Topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, making the procedure well-tolerated. The forehead and around the eyes are the most sensitive areas. Post-treatment, the skin feels similar to mild sunburn — manageable without prescription pain relief.

Can I exercise after a vampire facial? Avoid exercise for at least 24 hours, preferably 48 hours. Sweating can irritate healing skin channels and increase infection risk. Light walking is fine from day 3. Resume full exercise after day 5 when the skin surface has calmed.

How long after a vampire facial can I wear makeup? Mineral powder or very gentle mineral liquid foundation can usually be applied from day 2 to 3. Avoid heavy coverage or products with fragrances and preservatives until the skin is fully healed (approximately day 5 to 7).

Can I fly after a vampire facial? Wait at least 3 to 5 days before flying. Aeroplane cabin air is very dry, which can dehydrate healing skin. If you must fly sooner, apply a rich fragrance-free moisturiser frequently during the flight and drink plenty of water.

What is the difference between a vampire facial and a regular PRP facial? A vampire facial specifically combines PRP with microneedling for maximum penetration of the growth factors. A standard PRP facial may apply PRP topically without the microneedling component, or inject it directly — producing different (and typically less dramatic) results.
