Laser and IPL Aftercare: How to Protect Your Skin and Maximise Your Results
Laser and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments are among the most effective tools available for tackling pigmentation, redness, broken capillaries, and the early signs of ageing — but the aftercare you follow in the days and weeks afterwards is just as important as the treatment itself. What you do (and what you avoid) directly determines how well your skin heals, how quickly you see results, and whether you achieve lasting improvement without complications.
Here is what you need to know to protect your investment and support optimal recovery.
Why Aftercare Matters More Than You Think
During a laser or IPL session, precisely targeted energy is delivered into the skin to break down pigment, stimulate collagen, or address vascular lesions. This creates a controlled wound response — the skin's repair mechanism is activated, which ultimately delivers the improvements you are seeking. However, in the days immediately following treatment, your skin is in a heightened state of sensitivity and vulnerability.
The epidermis is temporarily compromised. Melanocytes — the cells responsible for producing pigment — can be reactive. Inflammation, though purposeful, needs to be managed rather than aggravated. Applying the wrong products or exposing the skin to heat or ultraviolet light during this window does not merely slow healing; it can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), prolong redness, and in some cases cause permanent discolouration.
Understanding this biology is the foundation of good aftercare.
The First 48 Hours: Calm, Cool, and Protect
The initial 48 hours are the most critical. Your skin will likely appear pink or flushed, and in some cases there may be slight swelling or a sensation similar to mild sunburn. This is entirely normal and expected.
During this window, follow these principles carefully:
Keep the skin cool and clean. Use tepid — not hot — water to cleanse gently, and pat dry with a soft cloth. Avoid saunas, steam rooms, intense exercise, or anything that induces significant heat in the skin. Heat prolongs the inflammatory response and increases the risk of PIH.
Moisturise consistently. A barrier-supporting, fragrance-free moisturiser is essential. Look for formulations containing ceramides, panthenol, or hyaluronic acid to reinforce the skin's protective function without introducing irritation. Our professional skincare range includes several medical-grade options specifically formulated for post-procedure skin — lightweight, non-occlusive, and free from common sensitisers.
Avoid active ingredients entirely. No retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, or any exfoliating acids for at least five to seven days post-treatment. These ingredients increase cellular turnover and can aggravate sensitivity at precisely the wrong moment.
Do not pick or rub. Pigmented lesions treated with IPL may darken slightly in the days after the session before they flake away naturally — this darkening is called "peppering" and it is a reliable sign the treatment has worked. Allow the process to complete without interference. Picking extends healing time and significantly raises the risk of scarring.
SPF Is Non-Negotiable
Sun protection after laser or IPL is not optional — it is essential and must begin from day two onwards. Ultraviolet exposure on recently treated skin dramatically increases the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, particularly in medium to deeper skin tones, and can undo months of treatment progress.
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every morning once the initial sensitivity has settled, and reapply every two hours if you are spending time outdoors. Physical (mineral) sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are preferable during the first week, as they sit on the skin's surface rather than requiring absorption. A tinted mineral SPF doubles as light coverage while the skin is still visibly recovering.
Critically, this commitment to sun protection should extend well beyond the post-treatment period. Ongoing daily UV protection is one of the most powerful things you can do to preserve the long-term results of any professional treatment and prevent new pigmentation from forming.
Weeks Two to Four: Supporting Skin Renewal
Once the immediate sensitivity has passed, you can begin reintroducing your regular routine gradually. Retinoids and vitamin C serums can typically be restarted from day seven to ten, depending on your skin's individual response. These ingredients actively support the collagen remodelling process that laser and IPL initiate — so reintroducing them thoughtfully, rather than avoiding them long-term, is beneficial to your results.
If you have received treatment specifically for pigmentation, a brightening maintenance serum containing niacinamide or tranexamic acid can help regulate melanin activity during the healing phase and reduce the likelihood of pigment returning. Your treating clinician will advise on what is appropriate for your skin type and the specific protocol you received.
It is also worth noting that mild peeling or flaking in week one to two is normal and should not prompt you to exfoliate. Let the skin shed naturally, continue barrier support, and resist the urge to do more.
Planning Your Next Session
Most laser and IPL protocols require a course of treatments — typically three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart — to achieve optimal and lasting results. Your practitioner will assess your skin's response at each visit and adjust the protocol accordingly. Resist the temptation to shorten intervals between sessions; adequate recovery time is not inefficiency, it is part of the mechanism.
If you notice any unexpected reactions during your recovery — unusual swelling, blistering, or hyperpigmentation developing — contact your clinic promptly rather than waiting for your next scheduled appointment.
